In an ordinary day, it is very unlikely that you will do any backbends. No, in fact, it is more likely that you spend a majority of your day hunched forward at a desk, at your car, tending to someone, lifting and/or reaching for something. By introducing backbends into your daily routine, you will begin to notice significant changes in how you sit, stand and walk. And these changes may lead to more physiological effects such as improved circulation from changes in your breathing, muscular stability from changes in your posture, and overall well-being from reduced tension around the upper back, among other benefits.
In this workshop with Jen Brown, you will explore the variety of backbends that are available to you, both supported (with props) and unsupported (without props). Students of all levels will be able to benefit in this class as we focus on not simply creating a flexible spine, but on lengthening the spine and opening the front body from the ankles to the wrists. By using many of the techniques taught in the Iyengar method, you will learn how to make challenging backbends more accessible to you. The props are there to help you to achieve good alignment so that you can receive the benefits of the pose in a safe and progressive manner. You will see how modifications can be made as your flexibility improves over time, and how with dedicated practise, you can eventually eliminate the props altogether.

No experience is required. The course is designed for absolute beginners. You will be guided through the fundamental principles with breath, movement and alignment. This class offers a good foundation for you to progress to other classes and yoga styles.
