Cassandra McGufficke’s perspective in life and interests

My passion for connecting people with their potential is life-long and I believe strongly that most steps we take lead us to the right path, even if at times we’re looking in a different direction. I also do my best to live and share the opportunity to start over. Each week, day, minute, breath. We’re allowed to start again and learn from the last. I lived in France as an Au Pair briefly before spending several years in the corporate world here in Canberra, then moving to pursue study in linguistics & French at the University of Melbourne. Recently I also spent an incredible 6 months in Canada’s winter, studying in Montreal (I’m not a skier, just like a good story!). Outside of yoga I adore music, love to sing and get great joy from writing, decorating and discovering new places and products – whether a stunning landscape, new café or a great local wine.

Training and major influences

Whilst living in Melbourne I happened upon a studio which sparked my love for yoga. I had previously attended classes as you would your GP – sporadically, and only when things weren’t right. But here I discovered the power of brilliant teachers and regular practice and after 2 years I knew I wanted to share the thing that had so positively influenced my life; building strength, flexibility and most importantly a sense of love and balance in body and mind. Away from the studio I follow the work of Adriene Mischler whose approach to the practice and generosity in sharing with the world have no doubt contributed to my health and resilience when living or travelling far from a class. I completed my 200 hour Teacher Training in Northland NZ, and am motivated by teachers who relate to and inspire their students by both challenging them, and demonstrating compassion for the body and mind through movement and language which responds to the lives and interests of the class.

Style of teaching

I teach with a focus on return. We are not escaping or switching off, but rather reminding ourselves of our power, passion and purpose – with kindness, and balance. Return also refers to the sustainability of the practice – encouraging confidence through challenge and recovery through love so that students can experience the full benefits of breath & body movement and remain connected to a wellness-focussed yoga routine they want to come back to. With a passion for language, I will often drop a little quotation or thought to return to during class as well.

Most recent inspiring experience

I want to reference my Yoga Teacher Training here, not only because of the incredible knowledge and physical capabilities of my mentors – which are beautiful things to aspire to – but because of the stunning humans I spent my time with in New Zealand. A friend from University who I connected with over French classes and wine, following this dream she’d long held and sharing the experience with me through empathy, intuition and encouragement – and some amazing women all on very different paths but with one common purpose – to do more, to be their best, and to give their best in sharing a practice of compassion and empowerment with their communities – through yoga and various other ventures.

Un-yoga related, a couple of things come to mind. Watching midnight fireworks over the river at New Year’s in the Rocky Mountains as Sky Full of Stars played loudly over a speaker. Seeing some of my favourite musicians play at the infamous Metropolis theatre in Montreal and Carnegie Hall New York, equally, listening to an old man play saxophone in Central Park.

What people are saying about Canberra Yoga Space…

"I've been doing 3 classes a week after going through the beginners course August 2017. CYS has the best variety of teachers & yoga styles anywhere - I was recently staying in Gungahlin for a month & looked to see what studios were out there.. I ended up driving across town multiple times a week to get to classes at CYS. There doesn't seem to be anywhere like it. I'm so glad I did the beginners course with CYS, not only because it was a fantastic intro to various styles & teachers who are passionate and know their stuff, but also because I lucked into finding what I consider the best studio in Canberra. And there is a beautiful spirit about the place too. I'll keep coming there as long as I'm in Canberra :)" - Jenn, May 2018
